What Is Hydrogen?

Hydrogen is a chemical element and is the lightest, simplest element in the universe. It usually exists as a molecule with two atoms, hence the use of H₂ when describing hydrogen. Hydrogen is also extremely abundant. In fact, it plays a key role in many natural and industrial processes.

Why Hydrogen Matters?

It is a key ingredient in some industry areas

Hydrogen is already quite widely used in industry globally. Every year, the world produces about 100 million tonnes of it.

Hydrogen is quite critical for:

  • producing chemicals like methanol
  • processing metals

Reduction of carbon emissions

Most hydrogen today is made from fossil fuels, which creates carbon dioxide. However, hydrogen can also be made using water and renewable electricity through electrolysis, which is Metener’s chosen method of offering. This process is often referred to as ‘green hydrogen.’

Some examples of this can include:

  • steel production
  • long-distance shipping
  • aviation fuels
  • heavy trucks

It can store renewable energy

Renewable energy sources like wind and solar cannot always produce electricity when it is needed. This creates a challenge in terms of reliability. Hydrogen can act as a medium for energy storage, thereby improving the reliability of some of the renewable energy options.

How this can be done:

  • Electricity powers electrolysis to produce hydrogen.
  • Hydrogen is then stored in tanks or in storage underground.
  • Later, it can be converted back into electricity using fuel cell technology.

Powering vehicles

Hydrogen fuel cells can power electric vehicles. Instead of charging a battery, the vehicle converts the hydrogen into electricity onboard, powering the car.

Common examples include:

  • Toyota Mirai
  • Toyota Caetano H2 City Gold
  • Hyundai Nexo
  • Scania FCEV

The only real direct emission from these vehicles is water vapor, which makes this a very clean solution.

Hydrogen is not technically a primary energy source like coal, oil, or sunlight. Instead, it is an energy carrier, a way to store and move energy. Because it can be produced with clean electricity and used without emitting carbon, many believe that hydrogen could play an important role in the global transition process towards low-carbon energy solutions.
